dewey defeats truman singer/bassist James Reader has mastered the art of sounding in control but not dominating, and that's a tough space to fill. Not many singers in a genre as enamored with sloppiness and the "anti-perfection" as indie rock do it, but when it happens (Mac from Superchunk), it's a pleasure to hear. Reader also brings to mind Sean Nelson of Harvey Danger and that fuck from Eve 6 at times, but only in tone, and thankfully not in delivery or lyrical content.
Musically, DDT is in line with the great Matador lineup of the late 80's / early 90's (Silkworm, Superchunk) but with a decidely southern California twist. Part the breezy pop of the Beach Boys, part the pop punk of Fat Wreck, and a touch of the dissonant feel of an Appleseed Cast or Brandtson.
The six tracks on this EP fly by with soaring harmonies around every corner,
and irrestible hooks for days. Whether an already die hard fan of Dewey or an
uninitiated fan of strong, classic indie rock, this EP will do the job for you.
Strong songs by a solid band.
